Forewords Book of the Year, Kirkus Indie Best Lister, IBA and USA Book News finalist.

When Gomez enters a medical trial and a super sexy lab assistant falls for him, he thinks his luck has finally changed. But when one of the trial participants turns up dead and another goes missing, he begins to fear for his life.

No longer sure whom he can trust and which of his experiences are actually real and which merely drug induced delusions, he decides to go underground and work out a devious plan. What follows is a zany adventure defying all the hallmarks of the classic romp

Boy meets girl.
Boy stalks girl.
Girl already has a stalker.
Boy becomes her stalker-stalker.

We've seen it all before, of course. Many times. But this time it's different, if only slightly.

No Hope for Gomez! edition by Graham Parke Literature Fiction eBooks

So I bought this kindle book against my dear departed mother’s admonishments that you “can’t get something for nothing” which is true sometimes but that never stopped me from trying. So I purchased it for $0.00 from Amazon….and then it sat on my kindle shelf for months gathering virtual dust. So then I was on this long plane flight across these United States of America and back days later and I thought, I don’t have time to read a long book, so I looked on my dusty shelves and there was NO HOPE FOR GOMEZ and I thought, let’s see if I get anything for nothing. After reading about a third of it I started having feelings of guilt for having stolen this novel from the poor starving author, GRAHAM PARKE of whom I neither know if he is poor or starving but he must be since he gives his fine work away for free. By the time I finished I was thinking perhaps he was trying to hypnotize me into some Gomez loving cult for which there was no hope to get out, but I know darn well that was just my justification for not having paid him for his hard work in creating this 5 star masterpiece of entertainment. Read it and find out for yourself, or don’t so you don’t feel guilty like me.

P.S. I feel better now….I purchased his 2nd Gomez thriller for 99cents….at these price increases, 99% of nothing….it is likely worth much more than the the sum of its parts as you will soon find out. Enjoy. See you at the CULT MEETINGS.

No Hope for Gomez! edition by Graham Parke Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is truly a fun read. Gomez is an uninspired and uninspiring character (in the story, not in the reading) who inherits an "antique junk" shop with its stranger than sci-fi assistant. As the store doesn't make enough to support Gomez, he enrolled in a paying unspecified drug trial where he is required to blog about any reactions or thoughts about it. Whether he was really weird before starting the trial or because of it remains a mystery, but you're taken on some amazing flights of fancy, frenzy and fanaticism throughout the book. It proceeds at a good clip and keeps one giggling, if not laughing out loud throughout, and at the same time wondering at the author's basic sanity for being able to create such delightfully unpredictable humor. Will definitely read the sequel.
Author Graham Parke manages to make almost every paragraph strangely amusing without forcing the humor (too much) or veering into farce. That's a hard thing to pull off. (Disclaimer humor is subjective and you may experience a different result.) Even the title, No Hope for Gomez!, is wonderfully weird, offbeat, and fresh. (In my opinion.)

The sentences are simple, but it would be a mistake to view the writing as amateurish. Parke packs a lot of meaning and insight into his short quips.

A few cons. I was occasionally confused by the blog entry narrative device. Was Dr. Hargrove, a main character, reading all of the narrator's blog entries exactly as we the readers saw them? If so, that presents narrative problems. The blog entry format completely breaks down in the final pages -- the action occurring just doesn't make sense for multiple blog entries.

At one point, the narrator complains about a "mixed metaphor" uttered by another character. I stared at the character's comment (the supposed mixed metaphor) for five minutes as though it were some kind of zen koan. I couldn't find the mixed metaphor. Perhaps it was a sophisticated joke by the author to show the ignorance of the narrator. If so, cool!

Finally, the book deserves to be taken seriously, so it warrants a more professionally designed cover.

But these are quibbles. I download a ton of books to my device, and I usually only read a few chapters before I move on to the next. This book caught me in its surreal hooks. It is just weird enough to be enticing, and yet thoroughly plausible and familiar. Whenever I thought it had finally careened off the tracks, it soon came clanking back onto the rails.

As I nestled deeper into the story's detached embrace (oxymoron, not mixed metaphor), I started wondering who this author was, this Graham Parke. I found very little about him on the big wide internet except a small, blurry thumbnail photo of a somewhat dark looking character. So... Who is this guy? If you find out, let me know. You might want to keep a safe distance, though, because I am not entirely sure he is "all there".
Poor Gomez, there really is no hope for him but you will have a laugh finding out why. And the best part is Gomez is no sad sack, cry baby, he has hope in abundance. He recognizes that he has it rough but it doesn't stop him from planning to conquer the villain, rescue the damsel in distress and be the hero of her dreams. Of course lack of decent plans or positive results don't stop him either.
Gomez is a hilarious main character. Part dreamer, part fool, part everyman, you find yourself laughing at him and with him at the same time. Mostly you find yourself cheering for him.
If you like quirky characters and off beat stories that follow the typical patterns, you will enjoy this book. The writing is very good. There's an understated mania in Gomez's blogs that comes through so well. It's so funny! You are reading supposed computer postings, about which everyone complains you can't tell the emotional context of the author. Mr. Parke has done an excellent job of conveying the emotional context of Gomez in each of his computer blogs. Kudos to you sir! I wonder why the rest of us miss it in real life?
Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and feel that it has a wide appeal. So if you're up for something a little off beat, a little outside the everyday, that will make you laugh a bit and smile some give this book a try. If you are tired of reading the same old story with different character names and you want to stretch your imagination a bit pick up a copy of this book. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
