Meet Patrick Cleary party boy, loser, and spaz. Patrick’s been trying desperately to transform himself, and the results have been so spectacular, they’ve almost killed him. Meet Wes “Whiskey” Keenan he’s a field biologist wondering if it’s time to settle down. When the worst day of Patrick’s life ends with Whiskey saving it, Patrick and Whiskey find themselves sharing company and an impossibly small berth on the world’s tackiest houseboat.
Patrick needs to get his life together—and Whiskey wants to help—but Patrick is not entirely convinced it’s doable. He’s pretty sure he’s a freak of nature. But Whiskey, who works with real freaks of nature, thinks all Patrick needs is a little help to see the absolute beauty inside his spastic self, and Whiskey is all about volunteering. Between anomalous frogs, a homicidal ex-boyfriend, and Patrick’s own hangups, Whiskey’s going to need all of his patience and Patrick’s going to need to find the best of himself before these two men ever see clear water.

Two of my favorite guys. Patrick, young, unlucky in love and the people around him, goofy, pretty and earnest, trying to find his place in the world and vulnerable to a lot of creeps. Whiskey, environmental scientist, clever and quick and maybe even wise, moving around a lot, only beginning to notice his need for a 'home'. Destiny brings Patrick crashing into Whiskey's life, and Whiskey steps up...and is startled to realize Patrick may be just what he needs. This book is great, with all the right bits for me: funny, relatively slow burn over months, sweetness and caring, humor between the characters and in events, maybe 15% mystery, some details on backstory, extensive details on work context, and the rest focused on the character building and relationship development. So, a balance between "other" story and the relationship development. I also seem to be a sucker for feeling worried for one sweet character, and then soon running into the other good guy...there maybe trouble ahead, but I am already so relieved! Very strong character building, with switches between MCs POV from chapter to chapter. The forced slowdown on the relationship near the end really contributed to my strong buy-in to the HEA.
A Highly Recommend: have reread multiple times, a go-to book for a comfort romance read, on my Best MM shelf.
Things I consider in an mm romance
Smexy scale 1-5: 3
These guys have only a few (2?) explicit scenes: they are hot and appropriate to story. Some of my favorite moments are when Patrick catches Whiskey's attention, and Whiskey is swamped with 'feelings'. Yum.
"Whiskey watched as his muscles flexed, and the line from his shoulders to his back to his ass to his thighs to his calf to his bare, long feet made that scattered kid into one perfect, fluid piece."
Humor scale 1-5: 5
Smartass people doing what they do. "Whiskey’s mouth lifted in appreciation. The kid was a smart-ass. Of all the wide variety of asses—feminine and soft, male and hard, open and begging, reluctant and tight, Whiskey’s most favorite, very bestest type of ass was this type right here. The snark-at-the-world smart-ass."
Likable MCs scale 1-5:5
As noted. Not a broad cast of characters here, though Freya is great.
Angst scale 1-5: 2
Patrick is really vulnerable and hurting at the beginning, and basically splatters it all over the pages. I winced and worried, and then we met Whiskey...and then I waited with baited breath...."Patrick’s smile was nuclear, but Whiskey looked at it too long anyway and maybe burnt out all of the non-Patrick receptors in his brains, or at least that was how he described it to people for the rest of his life."
Do not read this book if you are afraid of frogs, yoga, environmental science or houseboats.
Warning: A roofie drug is used; violence in "worst break up scene ever."

Clear Water edition by Amy Lane Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Excellent! I totally adored this book! Great story of Whiskey & Patrick and their finding each other, completing each other.
There are twists & turns in the book...but you just have to have faith that the author will get you "there" and oh does she ever?
One of my favorite quotes
“I don’t want you to stay with me thinking I’m with you because I’m fragile, Whiskey. I want you to know I’m staying with you because I love you and I don’t want anybody else. I want you to know I’m strong—and I want you to be happy. You go on this last thing, this last trip, and when you come back, I’ll make you a home and you’ll take care of me, and we’ll be happy ever after, okay?”
This story /audiobook is easily a 5 star story -- you will fall in love with Whiskey & Patrick, right along with watching them fall in love!
great characters. I got the wrong idea of Patrick from the book blurb. He is more like a poor little rich boy who gets taken advantage of by his lovers and ignored and ridiculed by his father. He has ADHD and nobody who understands him enough to help him live with it. He is adorable. Whiskey is the older (although plenty hot) man who comes into his life to love and rescue him. This book is fairly light in tone compared to Amy's more intense novels. It's a feel good book, a fast read because every bit is interesting and it has some very steamy sex scenes and a little bit of adventure. Great secondary characters as well. I highly recommend it.
This woman is hell on wheels with writing.
This story is fantastic.
The characters are real with their own crystal clear personalities, habits, and faults. Amy Lane also delivers amazingly in that the MCs are men who actually act like the gay men in the real world, not some fluffy romanticized stereotyped gay man doll.
And the dialogue? Pretty freaking fantastic. Funny (as in I had to go.yell at people and make them listen to bits) sweet romantic harsh. Natural and very real.
Just so well done.
You will fall in love with Patrick from the start--he seems selfish but is too naïve to project that to the reader or for that matter to the man who rescues him from sure death, Whiskey.
As for the latter, you will feel so sorry that a man who is as smart and capable of love seems to fight every fiber in his being demanding that he fall in love.
That these two superlatively drawn characters inch toward each other during a summer on a houseboat on the steamy Sacramento River where Whiskey is engaged in an environmental project and where Patrick has become his ward is a treat to watch.
Those who want heat from the start will have to wait as these two men, separated by eight years in age, deal with a host of interferences. These include Whiskey's research partner (and former girlfriend) Fly Bait (yes, that's right), two-headed frogs, a stalking criminal ex-boyfriend and Patrick's obnoxiously cold father.
This is a star-crossed coupling that builds in intensity as complications get smoothed over, and smooth patches become complicated. Take your time, bring it to the beach or pool, pour or fix a cold one, and have a ball.
